Great Exercises for Self-Improvement
from:
Self-improvement is a network of processes making it not an easy task. A lot of factors are involved and must be taken into consideration. Unfortunately, in some cases, the approach to self-improvement is not sustained when difficulties arise. Here comes in the need for certain exercises that are designed to lessen resistance and maintain the persistence of one’s desire to be a better person.
One must remember that in any endeavour, processes are involved. There are basically two types of processes: positive processes and negative processes. Positive processes, as the name implies, are good as they bring out the best in a person. Negative processes work on the contrary. In any self-improvement effort, one must make sure that there only positive processes so as to avoid decline in interest and commitment.
Exercises designed to boost self-improvement are examples of positive processes. They make the concepts and direction of the whole process clear which, in effect, encourages a person to further move towards his goals. They give more truth to the fact that self-improvement is not just a concept but a reality that everyone has the capacity to achieve.
Doing self-improvement exercises may, at first, feel quite uncomfortable especially if they are completely distant from what one has been used to. It is then very important that one understands their purpose first so that he will not easily give them up when things seem to be going wrong.
Verbalizing daily affirmations is probably one of the most basic forms of exercises for self-improvement. The person may be asked to declare in front of a mirror everyday as soon as he gets up from bed that it is going to be another day of endless opportunities to improve the self. Such type of affirmation, although generally simple to do, somehow keeps one’s commitment to self-improvement in place no matter what. This is so because it has been a studied phenomenon that when a person says something, he will do his best to live up to it. Otherwise, he will feel disturbed and uneasy. In other words, the person becomes more and more convinced that he can do something about the situation and feels bothered when he does not exert any effort to do so.
Encouraging practice is also a good exercise for self-improvement. For instance, a person is targeting to improve as a guitarist. Several exercises everyday focusing on certain keynotes or finishing an entire song will surely yield an improved performance.
Moreover, most psychologists and counsellors would advice their patients to list down whatever improvements or milestones they notice everyday. Such do not have to be very significant. Even minor successes can be listed down. In this way, the person does not overlook his own progress and see for himself that self-improvement is really possible. It just happens one step at a time. This is very important because discouragement comes easily and the list is a good way to concretely counter whatever doubts one has in his mind.
There are still many other possible exercises for self-improvement. These are just the basics but it can be noticed that the others are almost just variations of these. What is important is that the exercises should keep a person committed to his goals no matter what. They should keep him focused in spite of bugging distractions along the way.
